Historic Dodge City Police Docket Book Recovered
The FBI and the Ford County Sheriff’s Department announce the recovery of the Dodge City Police Docket book. This ledger, with an estimated auction value of approximately $100,000, contains historically unique details of old west city court cases in the City of Dodge City, Kansas during the period of 1878-1882. The recovery of this historical ledger, which references legendary law enforcement officers Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, marks the return of a piece of our Nation’s history.
The ledger was last documented in the city’s possession in the 1950’s. The investigation into this cold case was a jointly worked matter with the Ford County Sheriff, the FBI and the United States Attorney’s office, District of Kansas. Logical investigative techniques led to the recovery of this ledger, which has been authenticated, in Columbus, Ohio.
Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Colin Wood, District of Kansas has filed a civil forfeiture, the results of which will determine if this ledger can be returned to the City of Dodge City.
