Federal Charges Filed in Topeka Bank Robbery

TOPEKA, KS—Gregory D. Crosby, 44, Kansas City, Mo., has been charged with attempted bank robbery, U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said today.

According to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in Topeka, in the afternoon of May 21, 2009, Crosby drove up to the drive-in at the Capitol Federal Bank branch at 2901 S. Kansas and demanded money. The teller refused to hand over any money and Crosby drove off. Soon after that, Topeka Police arrested Crosby in the parking lot of the Wal-Mart on 37th Street in Topeka driving a stolen car.

If convicted, he faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000. The Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Kansas Highway Patrol and the Topeka Police Department investigated. Assistant U.S. Attorney Randy Hendershot is prosecuting.
