BAXTER SPRINGS MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO EXTORTION CHARGE

Timothy J. Schooley admits he and former Cherokee County Attorney Michael Goodrich
received money from Sensations Gentlemen’s Club

WICHITA, KAN. – Timothy J. Schooley, 30, Baxter Springs, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of extortion Monday.

In his plea, Schooley admitted that between March and May 2007 while he was in the company of former Cherokee County Attorney Michael Goodrich he demanded to share with Goodrich money received from an employee of Sensations Gentlemen’s Club in Galena, Kan. He admitted obtaining the money through the threat of informing authorities that Goodrich was accepting favorable treatment and money from the club in return for providing favorable treatment for employees by dismissing traffic tickets and other case costs.

Schooley is set for sentencing for July 14.He faces a maximum penalty of one year in federal prison and a fine up to $100,000.

Goodrich is scheduled for a jury trial July 8, 2008, on charges of extortion, wire fraud and intimidating a witness.

U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Mona Furst for their work on the case.
