FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KANSAS MAN SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS FOR ENTICING A MINOR

KANSAS CITY, KAN. - Roger Albert Butter, 42, Ottawa, Kan., was sentenced Monday to 5 years in federal prison for using a computer to entice a minor to engage in sexual activity.

"Mr. Butter will be required to register as a sex offender, and after he completes his sentence he will be required to serve five years on supervised release," said U.S. Attorney Eric Melgren.

In a guilty plea entered in October, Butter admitted that in November 2003 he began communicating with a minor female living in Tennessee who he met in a Yahoo! chatroom. During conversations via computer through November 2004 he made numerous references to having sex with the girl. He used a Web camera to send her images of him masturbating.

In May 2004, he traveled from Kansas to Tennessee to meet the girl and to have sex with her. His plans were disrupted, however, when the girl brought her sister along to meet him at a Wal-Mart store in Selmer, Tenn.

Melgren commended the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Assistant U.S. Attorney Kim Martin for their work on the case.
